Tracking and health: Argentina tracking technology drugs from beginning to end

From the laboratory to the patient, the drug circuit passes through controls, distributors, logistics operators, drugstores and pharmacies. With specific technologies applied to the health sector it is now possible to monitor every stage of the chain and prevent fraud in its trading. In fact, a national company developed tracking software for the pharmaceutical and drug industry and has already managed to position itself in Argentina and Brazil.

The FONSOFT is focused on the software industry and IT services, this is one of the four financing funds that the Ministry of Science through the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion uses to support technological innovation.

This is the Verifarma system, created by the firm BDEV thanks to funding from the Ministry of Science, awarded by the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion. The company received funding to run the instrument after postulating for Entrepreneurs Trust Fund and Promotion of the Software Industry (FONSOFT) and has so far received $ 5 million, with six ongoing projects.

This funding instrument will be presented today in the city of Mar del Plata during a promoting day aimed at college students, entrepreneurs and companies that generate ICT innovation projects in this field sector. The meeting will take place at the headquarters of the Association of Information Technology and Communication of Mar del Plata (Actima), located on Corrientes 1725, piso 2, office 9 by Eng. Martin Albarracín. The activity is part of plan de difusión que el FONSOFT se encuentra llevando a cabothe dissemination plan that FONSOFT is taking place across the country.

“By 2019, 75% of prescription drugs in the world will be covered by law serialization and tracking," explains Santiago Spector, general manager of BDEV. Spector is one of the entrepreneurs behind this initiative, working since 2007 with Ignacio Los Daneri, Rodrigo Lopez Martinez and Sebastian Migliorisi.

"Applying this tool meant a great springboard for us. We are overcoming financial constraints and received support that enabled us to grow with greater support. And over time the experience is becoming more agile, better methodologies and quality of response, "says the manager.

Real-time control throughout the chain

According to the latest data released by the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 30% of medicines sold in emerging and developing countries are counterfeit. This figure represents around 35 million annual dollars in fraud and losses for states and pharmaceutical companies. For patients, the intake of these drugs can bring serious health problems and even death.

That is why the development of the so-called drug tracking is presented as an effective tool to monitor in real time all transactions or batch of a product from its origin and throughout the distribution chain. This includes laboratories, distributors, logistics operators, drugstores, pharmacies, health care facilities and patients. Thus, traded drugs have an individual and unique identification, resulting in effective monitoring to ensure control, helping to leave uncirculated counterfeits.

Currently, Verifarma consolidated as a service platform tracking, providing a solution that allows you to know online the origin and tracking of pharmaceutical products to be consumed by the patient. Thus, companies that hire the service can inform the National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology (ANMAT) of the movements of those products. The system is ready for use by end consumers, pharmacies, drug stores, distributors and laboratories.

It is worth stressing that BDEV developed two versions for other vertical markets: Veriquim and VerifarmaVet, for the tracking of plant protection products and veterinary, respectively. In addition, a joint venture with LIXIS has been formed; an Argentine company dedicated to the development and manufacturing of technology equipment to control the quality of packaging processes of pharmaceutical products, and has dabbled successfully in the Brazilian market.
