The President of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner inaugurated by videoconference the new buildings of the Agrobiotechnology Institute of Litoral (IAL) and the Institute of Applied Mathematics of Litoral. The construction of both institutes, under the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) and the National University of Litoral (UNL), demanded more than the $ 16 million investment. From the land of 30 hectares where is also the CONICET Scientific and Technological Center, located near to the city of Santa Fe, the inauguration was led by the Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Lino Barañao and the president of CONICET, Roberto Salvarezza, under the Plan of Works for Science and Technology coordinated by the ministry of Science.

During the communication, where the Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Innovation of the province of Santa Fe, David Asteggiano; the mayor of the city, José Manuel Corral; the rector of the National University of Litoral, Albor Cantard; and the director of IAL, Raquel Chan, were also present; the Argentine President said that "we decided to create the Ministry with a concept science and technology applied to the development of everything that is productive, and therefore adding value to Argentine products". Regarding to the inauguration of the buildings she added that "we are overcoming a 30-year infrastructure deficit".

Meanwhile, the minister Barañao explained that both institutes "develop first-rate basic science always thinking to solve problems", and he added that "in both cases is to advance in knowledge and promote economic development of the country". In turn, the president of CONICET said that "the IAL is equipped with most up-to-date technology required to investigate the molecular basis by which plants adapt to the environment with all its implications for development of new varieties allowing crops to extend and improve".

The Agrobiotechnology Institute of Litoral, created in 2008, has 1,700 square meters in which $ 12.9 million were invested, fully funded by the CONICET. Meanwhile, the Institute of Applied Mathematics of Litoral has 404 square meters for which more than $ 3.3 million were allocated. In this case the construction had contributions from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation for the amount of $ 1,697,160 and $ 1,688,819 from CONICET.

The IAL new building consists of four half levels connected by ramps where there are ten laboratories with six counters each, a central instrumentation laboratory, a microscopy laboratory, a microbiology lab, four plant growth chambers, a wash room, five steering groups offices and ten boxes for young researchers. It also has a classroom with seating for 80 people, a library hall, a multipurpose room and an external greenhouse, designed with common areas to allow young researchers to develop their own lines of work.

The IAL is dedicated to the development of research and technologies in the various scientific disciplines related to biotechnology applied to agricultural production, technology transfer to the productive sector, providing products and services to society and human resources with specialized training in vegetal biotechnology. Research lines focus on molecular mechanisms taken by plants to be adapted to unfavorable environmental conditions. In addition to basic studies leading to an understanding of these mechanisms, the IAL has developed genetic engineering technologies to improve plants of agronomic interest. They have been transferred to the productive sector for further development and commercialization. In addition, the institute has a long-standing history of submitting invention patents and transfer activities related to agricultural activities.

Currently it has 18 researchers and 23 fellows of CONICET, six UNL teachers and seven members, including professionals, support technicians and administrative staff. Also two fellows of the Fund for Scientific and Technological Research of the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion develop their activities, three from the UNL and 12 graduate students in the process of thesis. During 2013 the IAL added four researchers repatriated through the RAICES Programme, Network of Argentine Researchers and Scientists Abroad under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation.

The Institute of Applied Mathematics of Litoral (IMAL) has two floors. 19 rooms for researchers, two rooms with eight positions each for fellows, one secretarial office, one wiring room and server, one computer room and one multi-purpose room. In the facilities operate 22 researchers, three support technical professionals and 17 trainees.

In this institute, established in 1977 on the basis of the Special Programme of Applied Mathematics (PEMA), lines of research in harmonic analysis, differential equations, numerical analysis, inverse problems and statistics were developed. Research developed in the IMAL has foundations components such as logic and number theory. It aims to develop the core disciplines of mathematics, statistics and computer science through research, contributing to the advancement of knowledge

The Work Plan for Science and Technology administrated by the Science portfolio includes new buildings throughout the country in order to strengthen the infrastructure and working conditions of the national scientific and technological system.
