The Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Argentine Ministry of Science (MINCYT, for its acronym in Spanish) and Rothamsted Research Limited (RRes), from United Kingdom, provides for the identification of opportunities for cooperation and fostering of common activities in connection with research and investigation projects. Also, this will serve to encourage the organization of scientific and technological symposiums, workshops and meetings which may favor the interchange among public bodies, universities, companies and laboratories from both countries.

The document was initialed by the head of the MINCYT, Lino Barañao, and the Executive Director of RRes, Ralf Achim Dobermann, at the Scientific and Technological Pole of Palermo. The ceremony was attended by the director of Institutional Integration and Cooperation, Mariano Jordan; and the director of the Prosperity and Economics Division of the British Embassy with offices in the Argentine Republic, John Patrick Gallagher.

With regard to the agreement, Barañao stated: “We are very enthusiastic about this memorandum, since it represents another example of the relaunching of our relationship with the United Kingdom. Additionally, I consider that it is the appropriate time to do so due to the improvements shown in terms of biotechnology, a field in constant change”.

As for Achim Dobermann, he expressed that: “At present, we have strategic alliances with universities and companies since, to us, cooperation is not a minor issue. In effect, our researchers are highly interested in interchange and we expect to be able to reach significant results in the mid-term.

As for Jordan, he reminded the recent mission of the MINCYT to Great Britain, which resulted in the execution of a trilateral agreement with the Francis Crick Institute and GlaxoSmithKline, for the implementation of a public-private consortium, which includes transfers and training for scientists of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET).

Rothamsted is one of the more relevant agricultural research centers around the world, with a pathway of more than 170 years of scientific innovation applied to the sector. Among its goals, stand out the transfer of knowledge for the development of new practices allowing for an increase in productivity of harvests, and the generation of sustainable solutions in connection with energy and food.
