The Minister of Science initiated the bilateral cooperation mission in France

Today, Barañao held meetings in the Argentine Embassy in Paris and participated in the award ceremony of the prize L' Oréal -UNESCO For Women in Science 2014, which was given to a CONICET scientist.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Dr. Lino Barañao, launched today the official mission which will end on Friday, March 21, in the French cities of Paris and Grenoble, aims to strengthen and deepen bilateral actions between Argentina and France. The National Director of International Relations from the Ministry of Science, Mrs. Águeda Menvielle, accompanies the Minister of Science in the mission.

The event began in the Argentine Embassy in Paris, where Minister Barañao met with the CEO of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean Foundation (EU- LAC), Jorge Valdez. Later, he met with the general manager of the Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA), Bernard Bigot, the representative of the CEA Americas Mission, Fátima Ovali, and the Science attaché of the Embassy, Ettiene Saur were also present in this meeting.

In the afternoon, Barañao participated in the award ceremony of the L' Oréal –UNESCO Award For Women in Science 2014, at the University of the Sorbonne, where the CONICET principal investigator, Cecilia Bouzat, was honored for her contribution to our understanding of how brain cells communicate among themselves and with muscles. The international L’Oreal - UNESCO "For Women in Science" programme is the first award to honor the contribution of women in science, given each year, which highlights scientific excellence of five female researchers worldwide. Bouzat, was honored for his scientific career in Latin America, she is a member of the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), Professor of Pharmacology at the National University of the South (UNS) and the vice -director of the Institute for Biochemical Research of Bahia Blanca (INIBIBB, CONICET- UNS) where she has worked since 1997 in the research of receptors called Cys-loop found in the nervous system, muscle and neuronal cells.

Upcoming activities

On Thursday 20, the Science Minister will travel to the city of Grenoble together with his delegation. On Friday 21 morning, Barañao will be received by the MINATEC director, Jean -Charles Guibert, to visit the facilities. Later, he will meet with the French Minister of Higher Education and Research, Geneviève Fioraso, to discuss about bilateral cooperation in science, technology and innovation. Then, Barañao and Guibert will sign a letter of intent between the Argentine Ministry of Science and MINATEC to strengthen cooperation in the field of micro and nanotechnologies. At the end of the event, the head of the Ministry of Science will meet with a group of Argentine researchers.

It is noteworthy that our country maintains active links in science and technology with France since 1964, reaching several cooperation agreements, including, among others, the researchers exchange project and the training scholarships project. Moreover, the RAICES Programme (Network of Argentine Researchers and Scientists Living Abroad) has presence in France, registering 256 Argentine researchers living in such country. Moreover, binational centers have been established such as the Argentine-French Centre in Engineering Sciences (CAFCI) and the French-Argentinean International Center for Information and Systems Sciences (CIFASIS). Both countries participate in binational centers such as the Argentine - French Centre for Engineering Sciences (CAFCI), located in the Science and Technology Cluster; the UMI Joint International Unit on Weather and the International Associated Laboratory (LIA), among others. Furthermore, cooperation projects with the SANOFI laboratory and the OSEO industrial and commercial organization have been developed, as well as cooperative agreements between Argentina and France in the framework of the European Union.
