The Center of Excellence in Translational Medicine will start to be built.

Lazovski, Pereyra, Barañao and Medina led the signing.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Lino Barañao, led the ceremony to inaugurate the building of the Center of Excellence in Translational Medicine (CEMET) to be built in the High Complexity Hospital in Red El Cruce "Dr. Néstor Carlos Kirchner" in Florencio Varela. The building of the center will require an investment of more than $ 16.5 million financed through a credit granted by the Argentine Technology Fund (FONTAR) of the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Promotion. Also during the meeting was signed the contract to carry out the project "Clinical and molecular epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable chronic diseases in a hospital of high complexity", approved by the Argentine Fund Sector (FONARSEC) of the Agency, for the development of which a subsidy of nearly $ 15 million will be granted.

The building of the center will require an investment of more than $ 16.5 million.

During the ceremony, Barañao said that thank to the project the CEMET "is going to specialize in new diagnostic techniques such as genomics and will be devoted to find out suitable drugs by modeling through bioinformatics". Also Barañao stressed the importance of translational medicine as "it allows switching from first class basic research to the patient’s bed" and he added that "this type of medicine is one of the key policy objectives of our ministry" Finally, the Minister of Science said that "Argentina has the possibility to stand out by the level of medical services and science and technology have to contribute to the goal of a quality of life similar to that of the more developed countries".

The CEMET have a reference diagnostic laboratory for clinical trials, a reference laboratory of molecular biology and a clinical research department where research teams led by scientists at the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) will work. The aim is that the synergy between the Hospital and CONICET become "El Cruce" in the only public university hospital producer of knowledge transfer to patient care of south suburbs. the completion of the work is expected within the following 24 months. The initiative was presented under the tool Refundable Contributions to Provision and Consolidation of Technology Services (ARSET) administered by FONTAR.

Moreover, the "clinical and molecular epidemiology of noncommunicable diseases and chronic diseases in a hospital of high complexity" project was presented in the call Sector Fund of Biotechnology - Biotechnology Projects in Translational Research by a team composed of the National University of Quilmes (UNQ), the National University Arturo Jauretche (UNAJ), the National University Foundation Arturo Jauretche (FUNAJ) and the High Complexity Hospital in Red El Cruce "Nestor Kirchner". The contract commits the institutions to provide nearly $ 6.5 million for the achievement of the initiative whose overall objective is to articulate through a biotechnology platform scientific knowledge, clinical research and clinical practice, in order to achieve a more rapid and effective adoption of public health practices resulting in better patient care.

The initiative will be focused on initiating processes of strengthening competencies for hospital clinical research related to human resources and information technology. Lines of work in cardiovascular research will be developed to study the determinants of the increased prevalence and aggressiveness of atherosclerotic disease in vulnerable socio-economic sectors; Infectious diseases research to identify possible factors of binomial microorganism-host serious determinants in patients; and in cancer research to identify the presence of tumor targets of targeted therapies, which may be characterized in relation to known tumor markers for each variant of cancer including histopathological, immunopathological, cellular and molecular criteria.

The mayor of Florencio Varela, Julio Pereyra, executive director of the Hospital, Dr. Arnaldo Medina, the UNAJ rector, Ernesto Villanueva; the secretary of Promotion and Health Programmes of the National Ministry of Health, Jaime Lazovski and the National deputy, Carlos Kunkel also attended the event.

The president of the National Agency for Science and Technology Promotion, Fernando Goldbaum and the President of the Board of the Hospital, Pablo Garrido also attended the event.

History of the hospital

El Cruce Hospital was created in response to the need of citizens of Florencio Varela, Berazategui, Almirante Brown and Quilmes to access to the higher complex care, which includes among other things various diagnostic studies and specialized surgeries.

It is a node in the health network of the region, comprising hospitals Mi Pueblo of Florencio Varela; Evita Pueblo of Berazategui; Arturo Oñativia of Almirante Brown; Isidoro Iriarte and the Specialized Subzonal Hospital Materno Infantil Oller of San Francisco Solano in Quilmes.

To access health care in this hospital, it is essential to be derived from such hospitals in case of requiring higher complexity. For this purpose, a patient management service will be implemented to coordinate shifts of different specialties.

The construction of El Cruce Hospital, 20,500 square meters covered, required an investment from the national government of over 100 million pesos. It has 130 beds, 50% are intensive care, coronary care, coronary unit, cardiovascular recovery, among others It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology: A six-cut tomography; open magnet MRI scanner 0.23 (unique with these features in public establishments in the metropolitan area); hemodynamic equipment that allows catheterization and monitoring system with modular equipment therapies and surgeries networking.
