The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Mr. Lino Barañao met in his office with the general secretary of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), Ali Rodriguez Araque. During the meeting, relevant issues to regional cooperation such as the importance of our natural resources, the human resources training and the awarding of scholarships were discussed as well as the organization of meetings focused on topics such as: science and technology, industrialization, security and defense and natural resources, among others.

"Our intention is that science and technology constitute an essential component of the UNASUR, adapted to local needs", said Barañao.

"We want from science and technology to begin weaving this network which is so necessary for our nations", said Barañao. In this sense, he expressed interest in the training of human resources, and he said that "the region is mature to begin the professionals training in their own field" and he added that "in terms of regional cooperation we still have a lot work to do”. The Minister also said that "our intention is that science and technology constitute an essential component of the UNASUR, adapted to local needs". In this regard, he highlighted some initiatives being conducted by Argentina, such as the BEC.AR and the Program.ar programmes.

Rodriguez Araque, with reference to the recovery of a regional vision, said that "the scientific and technological development is fundamental" but "the big problem is that if we develop such knowledge in abstract or if that knowledge is linked to the main regional strength". Finally, Araque stressed the importance of encouraging scientific-technological vocations "a great goal would be starting from the primary school encouraging children to be passionate about knowledge and research".

The Undersecretary of Administrative Coordination, Rodolfo Blasco, and the national director of International Relations,Águeda Menvielle also participated in the meeting.

It is noteworthy that in May 2013 the Articles of Incorporation of the South American Council of Science, Technology and Innovation (COSUCTI) of UNASUR were approved in Cuzco, Peru. Ecuador is the pro tempore president thereof, this fact has placed science and technology in a central place for regional development. In this sense, some actions to be financed by the Fund of Common Causes were approved, such as the "I Fair and International Meeting of progress, developments and experiences in Science, Technology and Innovation in South Biodiversity under the framework of the UNASUR" and "the South American Research Network for development, technology transfer, control surveillance of vector-borne diseases with emphasis on dengue, malaria, yellow fever and sickness diseases.
