The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Lino Barañao celebrated the consolidation of joint work between the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) and the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi in an event which also included the presence of the CONICET President, Roberto Salvarezza; the medical director of Sanofi in Argentina, Cristian Von Shulz and the French Ambassador in Argentina, Jean Michel Cassa. During the event reference was made to the work carried out since 2011, through an agreement signed that year by which the French laboratory assigned a 300-molecule genebank to a research team from the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Rosario (IBR- CONICET/UNR) for the generation of compounds acting on the disease called “Mal de Chagas-Mazza”.

Barañao: "what we celebrate at this event is a strategic alliance allowing us to contribute to public health with a strong international business and cooperation component."

It is noteworthy that an addendum to that agreement, signed in April this year, provided the transfer of 2000 additional molecules to the Sanofi chemical compounds genebank, for further testing and monitoring of toxicity in cultures of Trypanosoma cruzi. Also, a 12-month execution term and a contribution for the total amount of $225,000 by the company were established.

In this regard, the head of the ministry of Science reflected on the importance of cooperation with France and Sanofi as "a task in the basis of the creation of our Ministry. It is about the concept of science concerned with the other reinforcing the notion of basic science inspired in the use and social commitment". Barañao also said that "what we celebrate at this event is a strategic alliance allowing us to contribute to public health with a strong international business and cooperation component."

Meanwhile, the president of CONICET, Roberto Salvarezza stressed "we continue strengthening the relationship with Sanofi towards a key point as the transfer of knowledge to society". He also stressed that "these diseases, in which the focus is not only the economic value but the public health, are where we should make a major commitment". Salvarezza highlighted the cooperation with France as "one of our main partners in scientific knowledge at the international level towards achieving impact on the quality of life of the society".

In this regard, the medical director of Sanofi, Cristian Von Shulz said that from the company "we want to build our mark, to be seen as partners in health and integrated into the public health problems of the nation". He also expressed that “we want to encourage Argentine researchers have more tools available to keep producing original and innovative research enjoying international recognition”.

Meanwhile, the ambassador Cassa was pleased to express that "France and Argentina intensively cooperate in the fields of medicine and research in health sciences". He highlighted the Sanofi group as "a major investor in the country in a high-tech sector strongly committed in the area of research and development since 2011 conducts in association with national authorities, different actions to encourage the study and treatment of orphan diseases".

The Chagas-Mazza disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is one of the most neglected diseases worldwide despite being the major cause of infectious myocarditis. The treatments used so far show variables results, according to stage of disease, dose, duration of treatment, patient age, place of residence and unwanted side effects.
