The president of the National Agency for Science and Technology Promotion, an agency from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Fernando Goldbaum, led the signing of the agreement, through which a subsidy of $ 29,625,000 will be awarded to investigate and develop antiparasite, anti-TB and multivitamins medication. The project was submitted by a public-public consortium composed of the Biological Institute of La Plata "Tomás Perón", under the Ministry of Health of the province of Buenos Aires; the School of Exact Sciences of the University of La Plata (UNLP) and the Commission for Scientific Research (CIC) under the Ministry of Production, Science and Technology of Buenos Aires.

During the meeting, which was attended by the director of Argentinean Sector Fund (FONARSEC), Isabel Mac Donald, Goldbaum celebrated the work performed by the Agency "continuing investing in research, innovation, technological modernization and articulation" and he stressed the public-public component of the initiative as "a need to strengthen state agencies to be able respond to social needs".

The project, with a total investment of nearly $ 50 million adding the counterpart contribution, will pursue as main objective the strengthening technological capabilities of the Biological Institute in La Plata, from the incorporation of state-of-the-art technology for the production of vaccines and medicines. Among the specific objectives it is expected the development and production of anti-parasitic, anti-TB and multivitamins medications and rabies vaccines through a change of the current production system adopting the production of animal cells in bioreactors.

The institutions will have a three-year deadline to complete the project. The UNLP undertakes to provide highly specialized human resources and provide access to the facilities of the Center for Research and Development of Industrial Fermentation, under the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET-UNLP), in order to make use of the laboratory of animal cell culture and bioreactors. It will also provide access to its Medicine Manufacturing Unit and its areas of Galenic and Analytical Development, Quality Control and Production of Medicine Products.

Meanwhile, the Biological Institute of La Plata "Tomás Perón", will provide access to its production plant and warehouse sector of raw materials. The institution has areas of production processes for granulation, drying, mixing, compression and primary and secondary packaging of tablets, as well as control areas for physicochemical and microbiological quality.

In addition, the CIC will provide access to the cell bank and other facilities of the Multidisciplinary Institute of Cell Biology (CONICET - CIC) and will be responsible for the administration and management of the project.

The agreement, which forms part of the call "Health Innovative Technology Fund - Public Production of Medicines" administered by FONARSEC under the Agency, was signed by the Minister of Health, Alejandro Collia; the president of the UNLP, Raul Perdomo and the president of the CIC, José María Rodríguez Silveira, in the presence of the Minister of Production, Science and Technology, Cristian Breitenstein.
