Barañao strengthens the science and technology bonds with the Republic of India

The Minister of Science concluded today the official mission to the country of South Asia, the commitment to future bilateral actions was highlighted.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Mr. Lino Barañao, together with the National Director of International Relations of the Ministry, Águeda Menvielle finished today the official mission to the Republic of India, in a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology of India. The mission, which began on February 17 in Hyderabad and continued yesterday in New Delhi, was aimed at strengthening relationships in science and technology in the country and promote agreements.

"Interaction with India is of strategic value given the existing high symmetry, not only in terms of human resources but the need we have of doing high quality science while solving social impact problems", said Barañao.

Today in Nueva Delhi, the Minister of Science met with officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology of India and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the development of new lines of bilateral funding based on questions or particular topics of social interest involving interaction between disciplines was established. The work area in this case is the application of tools such as Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to agricultural biotechnology. The idea is to launch a round of consultations in both countries to identify specific issues to be resolved. A three month deadline has been established for this first identification stage. It is noteworthy that this new line will be added to other existing funding tools in science and technology cooperation activities. Furthermore, Barañao today visited the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB). This institute engages in bioinformatics studies applied to human genomic and research of risk factors for diseases in the Indian population. It also works on various diseases such as tuberculosis and epidermal conditions i.e. vitiligo.

Moreover, on Wednesday 19, the head of the Ministry visited the Center of Molecular and Cellular Biology (CCMB), where he toured the facilities, the state-of-the-art equipment and the work lines.

Barañao and Menvielle, accompanied during the mission by the Ambassador of Argentina in India, Raúl Guastavino, come back tomorrow from New Delhi.

It is noteworthy that Argentina and India maintain a cooperation in science and technology programme including the initiative called "mobility of researchers", which took place in 2005, 2006 and 2011. The two countries are involved in 18 projects funded with contributions from the European Union. Meanwhile the RAICES programme (Network of Argentine Researchers and Scientists Living Abroad), under the Ministry of Science aims to promote repatriation and links with Argentine scientists residing abroad, also has a presence in India, registering 72 Argentine professionals residing in that country. It should be noted that other official visits to the Republic of India have been made in 2004 and 2009, showing the fruitful relationship between the two nations.

It is noteworthy that Argentina and India maintain a science and technology cooperation programme including the initiative called "mobility of researchers", which took place in 2005, 2006 and 2011. Also both countries participate in 18 projects funded with contributions from the European Union.
