The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Lino Barañao received the delegation from the Czech Republic in his office, which was leaded by the Vice Minister of Education, Youth, and Sports from the Czech Republic, Dr. Tomás Hruda, with whom Minister Barañao signed a cooperation agreement in science and technology to encourage joint research projects for the two-year period 2014-2015. The National Director of International Relations, Águeda Menvielle, was also at that meeting.

The purpose of this agreement is to strengthen cooperation between both countries through exchange programmes for scientists and researchers, either during short stays (up to 15 days) or long stays (from 1 to 3 months).  Priority areas will be: Information and communications technologies, natural sciences and biotechnologies, new materials and nanotechnologies, medical sciences (including pharmaceutical sciences), and climate and environmental research.

During this meeting, Barañao expressed: “The idea is to continue with this line of cooperation in science and technology, specifically in the software industry, a key area for us that we need to consolidate. We intend to use each means we have available for its promotion. For that reason, we think that international cooperation with the Czech Republic is so important”. The Minister of Science highlighted the Argentine capacity to develop disruptive technologies and, in this sense, he referred to the successful articulation between the basic research and competitiveness (he mentioned cases, such as patents and licenses that Argentinean researchers achieved during recent years, which will bring about significant gains for Argentina).

In turn, Hruda said that “the purpose is to achieve competitiveness based on the specialisation of specific knowledge”. About cooperation, he added: “Each country should have its own strategy, but we should supplement each other in such areas as required by the other country, or anything the other country needs and we should focus on such cooperation”.

Both officers highlighted cooperation between Argentina and the Czech Republic and expressed they agree with their current reciprocity relation and the degree of commitment between both countries. At the end of this meeting, the officers visited the International Interdisciplinary Institutes for Innovation.

It is noteworthy that scientific and technological cooperation between Argentina and the Czech Republic is within the frame of the Inter-institutional Cooperation Agreement signed in 2006 between the Science and Technology Secretariat and the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports from the Czech Republic. Bilateral meetings should be highlighted, among which we can mention “The Society of Information and Communication”, held in 2007 in Buenos Aires. The Programme for Scientific and Technological Cooperation was signed in 2009 in Prague, for joint research projects for 2010-2011, highlighting areas, such as information and communications technology, biotechnology and research in climate and environment. During this year, the Argentine-Czech Technological Conferences were organised and the first call for projects was made. In 2012, the third call for project was made, where 20 projects were submitted, 12 of which were approved and performed during the period 2013-2014.
