The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Lino Barañao, participated in the presentation of the new stage of the Federal and Participative Agri-food and Agribusiness Strategic Plan (PEA, for its Spanish acronym) 2020 "From Goals to Policies", in charge of the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Carlos Casamiquela. The second stage of this plan aims to design tools in order to achieve the goals set in the previous phase and to provide new production challenges for 2030. The Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers, Jorge Capitanich and the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Carlos Tomada also attended the meeting.

The minister Barañao highlighted the coordinated work between ministries during the event, as part of a coherent policy "It's an essential fact" said Barañao, "because this is a government which cares about state policies" and he added in relation to the plan that "it was carried out through consultations with various sectors, that is precisely what ensures the plans constitute long-term policies”. Barañao said that "today knowledge is the leading creator of high quality work" and he explained that "science and technology activities improve the quality of life in developed countries, thus it is necessary that science and technology be linked to the different areas of government to have the same impact here".

Referring to the food demand as one of the challenges faced in agriculture, the Science Minister stressed the central role given to science and technology. In this respect, he stated: "We have to carry out not only the production industrialization to ensure efficiency but also enable the development to be harmonious. We must also ensure that in the process of supplying food to the world we generate quality work and more equitable federal development.

"We have to start thinking of as an agrifood Argentina, stop being exporters of raw materials and start exporting high value-added food, creating more jobs, developing technology in countryside, optimizing rural education, thus promoting rootedness" Casamiquela remarked, who was accompanied by his entire team. Furthermore, he remarked: "All industry members are invited to work towards achieving and updating the PEA goals".

The Chief of Cabinet Capitanich said that "the PEA is of strategic importance to our country as part of a structural development for the future of Argentina, allowing us to glimpse a very positive scenario". Meanwhile, the minister Tomada stressed that the plan is a call to work in State policies for which he confirmed that "the Ministry of Labor undertakes its commitment to achieve these goals by making available all tools to strengthen and address the workers needs.

The productive development and innovation policies for the food industry, suggested by the President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, seek to optimize food production in Argentina, in order to be consolidated as a major food supplier worldwide. It should be noted that at present the world population is estimated at around 7,200 million but the figure is expected to increase to 7,600 million in 2020 and to 8,300 million in 2030.

Among the PEA goals for 2020, production is expected to increase by about 50%, reaching 247 million tons of agricultural and forestry production, distributed as follows: Milk, 16.9 million; forestry, 10.7; cereals, 84.6; oilseeds, 69.8; fruit, 11.2; vegetables, 10.7; industrial crops 35.5; meat, 7.6
