Barañao inaugurated the Centre of Compared Medicine in Esperanza

The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Dr. Lino Barañao, led the inauguration of the Centre of Compared Medicine, which depends on the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) and the National University of the Litoral (UNL). At the event, which took place at the site of the School of Veterinary Science of the UNL in Esperanza, Santa Fe, were present the president of the CONICET, Dr. Roberto Salvarezza; the dean of the UNL, Dr. Albor Cantard and National congressman for the province, Omar Perotti.

During the inauguration, minister Barañao affirmed that  “the federalization process of science is essential to articulate the generation of knowledge with the solution of local problems promoting a higher competitiveness in the productive sector and decent, well paid jobs”. He also sustained that  “in the last ten years we have transformed science into a collective activity inspired on usage”“We have to guarantee the continuity of the State policy which has allowed us to recover hope regarding science and to bring science to Esperanza”, concluded the minister of Science.

On his hand, Salvarezza stressed the articulation among all actors and that  “the CONICET is strongly working in different lines defining actions and policies within the context of the national strategic plan, and this centre symbolizes all these actions”. The dean of the UNL, Dr. Albor Cantard expressed his satisfaction by saying that  “today we are facing one of the largest accomplishments which will probably be remembered as one of the landmarks of our university's recent history, where science, development, university administration, public works and connection with the productive partner sector are present in an integrated manner”

The Centre of Compared Medicine, which is part of the Institute of Veterinary Science of the Litoral (Instituto de Ciencias Veterinarias del Litoral - ICIVET), is engaged in the performance of pre-clinical tests of medicine and medical technologies of significant social interest. Compared medicine studies, in an interdisciplinary way, the biology of diseases in animal models to improve human and animal health with a comprehensive approach to the evaluation of new drugs and biotechnological products. Its new offices cover an area of 520 square meters, distributed in areas of production, biological tests, quality and administration management, among others. 15 researchers, 20 scholarship holders and technical and administrative personnel work there. 

In the context of the public-private project “Technological platform for the development and production of intelligent nanotransporters for drugs” , administered by the Argentinean Sector Fund (FONARSEC) of the National Agency for Science and Technology Promotion, which depends on the Ministry of Science, more than ARS 3,800,000 were assigned to state of the art equipment for the centre. In accordance with the objectives of the initiative and the needs of state of the art technology of the centre, part of the subsidy was destined to the acquisition of capital assets such as: a  mass spectrometer, a Fourier transform near-infrarred spectrometer, an autoclave, a standing refrigerated centrifuge, an ultrasonic homogenizator and a cultivation stove, among other laboratory apparatus and materials. Investment in all parts of the centres amounted to more than ARS 5,500,000.

Every space of the production and testing area has temperature automatic controls, lighting and air renovation, as well as anti-fire systems and permanent monitoring systems with high-resolution security cameras. It should be also mentioned that the centre complies with “Good Laboratory Practice” standards and is part of the national network of laboratories authorized by the National Service of Agri-food Sanity and Quality (Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria), with the peculiarity that it is the only centre among universities and institutes of the CONICET which is authorized to carry on pre-clinic developments aimed at the human and veterinary pharmaceutical industry.

Also present at the inauguration were Esperanza city governor, Ana María Meiners; the dean of the School of Veterinary, Vet. Dr. José Luis Peralta; the director of the Santa Fe Scientific Technological Centre of the CONICET, Dr. Raquel Chan and the brand new director of the ICIVET, Dr. Hugo Ortega, among other authorities and special guests.
