Barañao delivered a lecture at Harvard and signed a cooperation agreement in Computer Science

The Minister of Science closed today the official mission at the recognized university in the United States with a talk on scientific and technological policy in Argentina.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Lino Barañao ended today in Boston the official mission to the United States of America with a presentation at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University about Argentina scientific and technological policy within the framework of Science and Technology in Latin America initiative. During the mission, which began on October 20, Barañao was accompanied by the national director of International Relations of the Ministry, Águeda Menvielle.

During his speech at Harvard, Barañao analyzed the policies and programmes in nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and communication being conducted by the Ministry under his charge. The lecture was attended by a wide range of audience. Barañao said that after the presentation "Argentinean participants expressed a renewed interest in returning to the country and recognized the value of the scholarships awarded by Bec.ar" training programme in science and technology abroad carried out by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Moreover, Barañao met with Kate Konschnik, Policy Director, Environmental Law Program at Harvard Law School to discuss the potential cooperation with our country from the experience gained in environmental studies in the United States on effects of shale oil and shale gas.

Additionally, yesterday in Washington, Barañao signed a cooperation agreement on science and technology with Hadi Partovi, founder of Code.org, a nonprofit organization devoted to teaching Computer Science. The agreement will include Argentina, through the Manuel Sadosky Foundation, in the Code.org community allowing the use of the programmes available on the site. Meanwhile, the Sadosky Foundation undertakes to facilitate the location and partnerships necessary for its implementation. Through this collaboration the Foundation will promote educational materials and the two institutions will jointly organize the Time Code.

Regarding such agreement the Minister said that "it is of major importance that Argentina be involved in an initiative which promises to bring about a revolution in teaching computing".

In Washington Barañao was also part of the "Coffee Talks" forum, where he spoke with young Argentines living in the city. On Wednesday 22 in the same city, Barañao attended a working session devoted to the analysis of bilateral programmes for the dissemination of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the sea and oceans sciences. It was also attended by the executive coordinator of the Scientific and Technological Cabinet of the Ministry of Science, Alejandro Mentaberry; and the executive director of the Sadosky Foundation, Santiago Ceria.

It is noteworthy that the mission started on October Monday 20 in Chicago, where Barañao signed an agreement on cooperation in science and technology with the Dean of the School of Science at the Purdue University, Jeffrey Roberts. Furthermore, Barañao and Menvielle held a meeting with members of the Network of Argentine scientists from the Midwestern of the United States, to define guidelines for the future.

While at the same city, on October Tuesday 21 Barañao signed with the dean of the University of Chicago, Eric Isaacs, a memorandum of understanding to promote cooperation and development of international scientific research activities through the development of particular projects in the areas of biological sciences, engineering, mathematics and physics, among others.
