The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Lino Barañao, presented today the prestigious Argentine industrial designer, Tomás Maldonado, in a lecture that was given at the Academy of Medicine under the proposal "Design: conceptual roads and contributions of discipline through three publishing presentations 2014". The meeting, in front of a young wider audience, was held within the framework "Design Center of Knowledge" that bears his name and is located in the Technological Scientific Center of Buenos Aires

During the opening ceremony Barañao said that: "At the time of giving the name to the Design Center of Knowledge the name Tomás Maldonado was proposed because this center serves to integrate different disciplines. The task of this center is to provide solutions to various technologies without sacrificing aesthetics. It's in our nature to enjoy the aesthetics of what serves. This is what this profound contribution made by Professor Tomás Maldonado is really about”.

Meanwhile, Maldonado said, "My presence here today explains the honor I feel that the Centre bears my name and surname. I hope two things: To meet the expectations of the Centre and that the Centre meets my expectations”. "During the talk Maldonado reviewed the new technology and its positive-negative aspects, the new realities posed by social networks like Twitter and Facebook, the problems in controlling the data (big data) and rights in the digital age, including other reflections that included delicious experiences of his professional and personal life.

The International Centre "Tomás Maldonado" purpose is to promote the implementation of interdisciplinary projects in strategic areas where design is a tool of innovation and as a space for interaction with other institutes of the Science and Technology Cluster and its international partners.

About Tomás Maldonado       

He is emeritus professor at the Polytechnic of Milan, Italy. From 1943 to 1954, he played an important role in the field of visual arts and industrial design in Argentina. He moved to Germany in 1954 where he lived until 1967, he was also a professor and dean of the School of Design at Ulm. In 1966 he was appointed Fellow of the Council of Humanities at Princeton University, United States. He presided the Executive Committee of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID). In 1969 he established in Italy, where he was Professor of Environmental Design at the University of Bologna and the Milan Polytechnic. He led Casabella, an architecture magazine He has received honorary doctorates from the Universities of La Plata, Córdoba and Buenos Aires and the Milan Polytechnic. In 2012, the President of the Italian Republic awarded him the title of Cavaliere di great croce which is the highest honorary distinction in that country. He was one of the initiators of the "Design Center of Knowledge", which bears his name and is located in the Science and Technology Cluster of Buenos Aires.
