Barañao and Giorgi inaugurated the 1st. South American Congress on Semiconductors

The meeting brought together experts and industry representatives to discuss the challenges facing the electronics industry in the future.

Barañao and Giorgi inaugurated the 1st. South American Congress on Semiconductors.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Lino Barañao, led with the minister of Industry, Débora Giorgi, the opening panel of the 1st. South American Congress on Regional Development Strategies of the Semiconductors Industry. Also the president of the Unitec Blue, Matías Gainza Eurnekian and the president of SEMI América, Karen Savala attended the meeting.

“I hope children be convinced that the future lies in science and technology and that today the technological scientific careers are the only ones that allow upward social mobility”, said the minister of Science.

The seminar brought together actors from domestic and foreign industry, members of the supply chain, academic specialists, and the private and government sectors to outline future scenarios and awareness of the importance of the sector. During the meeting held at the Hilton Hotel in Buenos Aires the outlook of the global semiconductor market, trends and developments in the major markets of South America; public policy and role of government in stimulating the semiconductor market; and how to transform specific initiatives in regionally integrated groups, were discussed;. Fab projects were also presented planned between Argentina and Brazil.

During his speech, Barañao reflected on the "significant change in the last 50 years that today we play, both locally and globally," referring to the amount of information generated which has brought enormous consequences in the economic world. On the other hand, he argued that this meeting is the "tangible sign of the importance of this industry". “I hope children be convinced that the future lies in science and technology and that today the technological scientific careers are the only ones that allow upward social mobility”, said finally the minister of Science.

Meanwhile, Giorgi briefly outlined the historical journey of the last 13 years of the Argentinean industry and highlighted the great progress made by the current administration commenting that "today we are talking about the industry of the future, a thriving and standing industry". Accordingly, he said that the country has a strengthened industry "because both the state and private have worked hard to such purpose: with investments, strengthening the domestic market, interacting with the world and defending ourselves properly".

In the afternoon, the Secretary of the Department of Planning and Policy of the Science Ministry, Ruth Ladenheim, participated in the session on public policy and the role of governments in the promotion of the market. During her presentation, the official referred to the vision of technology industries, including semiconductors. “In terms of public policy, from the Ministry of Science we promote the generation of ecosystems with more competitiveness within the productive matrix" Ladenheim said. In relation to the central theme of the conference, the Secretary noted that "this sector is very important because of the technological intensity it presents. Today we have the ability to develop, in a country as Argentina, electronic circuits, integrated circuits and an industry that is absolutely transversal and has applications in many productive areas".

The president of the Argentina Nanotechnology Foundation (FAN), Daniel Lupi, also attended the meeting and moderated the panel "Challenges and Opportunities for semiconductors in Latin America", which featured lectures by specialists from Uruguay, Chile, Italy, Brazil and Argentina, who presented a regional overview of the microelectronics and semiconductor industry.

The congress was organized by Semi South America with the cooperation of Unitec Blue and the FAN.
