By means of an agreement entered into by and between the Ministry of Science and the Italian company Leonardo – Finmeccanica, Argentina and Italy are trying to promote a commercial link involving the safety and defense area.

Lino Barañao, the Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, and Giuseppe Panetta, on behalf of Andrea Parrella, the executive vice-president of the Italian company Leonardo - Finmeccanica, signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at promoting commercial cooperation involving aerospace safety and defense activities through high technology solutions and abilities, making special emphasis on airships, helicopters and safety and defense solutions for the control of frontiers and territory.

Barañao detailed the difference that implies to bet on investing in intelligence: “It represents capital which will be crucial for the creation of wealth in the future, and we must take advantage of our mutual understanding, because it will define a new country model which bets on technology and international cooperation.”

The agreement is intended to regulate the terms and conditions for the development of business opportunities and cooperation in common interest areas and/or joint companies in defense and safety activities, especially, in high technology abilities and solutions in order to develop joint research and development programs (R&D).

With regard to the bilateral cooperation relation, the Minister of Science claimed that Italy and Argentina have had a long cooperation history and that they share a profound cultural identity and “now, we are facing a much more open-to-the-world management and, since last year, we have been working on this link, which began thanks to the signing of an agreement with Confindustria.” Making reference to the agreement, Barañao said that it will bring about the creation of a fund “which will invest in projects in Argentina, and our intention is for this investment to promote innovation in companies with an important element of company social responsibility (RSE, for its acronym in Spanish.)”

Italy's contribution to this agreement, as the Minister stated, will be “management abilities and knowledge of the global markets.” At the same time, Barañao emphasized the difference that betting on intelligence investment implies: “It represents capital which will be crucial for the creation of wealth in the future, and we must take advantage of our mutual understanding, because it will define a new country model which bets on technology and international cooperation.”

Panetta affirmed: “I am honored to be representing Leonardo, which is leader in the field of safety and defense production, and we hope that the signing of this agreement is the basis of a broader link with Argentina.”

Furthermore, Mariano Jordán, the person in charge of the National Directorate for Institutional Cooperation and Integration of the Ministry of Science; Teresa Castaldo, the ambassador of Italy in Argentina; José Kenny and Eugenio Martis, the scientific and defense aggregates of the Embassy of Italy in Argentina, respectively; Gianni Reginato; Guillermo Benito, the INVAP commercial manager, and representatives of the law firms Garrido Abogados y Gianni, Origoni, Grippo&Cappelli, ítalo argentino were also present in the signing process.
