The National Microscopy System (SMN) is a network that links the Argentine largest microscopes purchases with public funds. From this network, we are seeking to expand access to such equipment, facilitating their improvement by the provision of financing and promoting training of human resources. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation drives this initiative together with the Interagency Council on Science and Technology (CICyT).

This council is a space for articulation and networking of national agencies that perform science and technology activities.

SNM has been created with the mission of generating, performing and coordinating policies that contribute to maximizing the use of large microscopes.

In other words, large equipment used for the activity of research has been purchased with public funds.

Such network encourages the use of large microscopes from large health centers by any research teams that could not use them for being external professionals.

Also, this system seeks to facilitate continuous improvement of equipment by the purchase of supplementary equipment, fittings, insurances, etc., thus optimizing their features and capabilities.

This initiative also promotes training of human resources in different microscopy techniques, as well as the exchange of institutional experiences in the use and maintenance of such equipment.

The National Microscopy System in Figures

  • 48 centers are members of the National Microscopy System (SNM).
  • 59 are equipment included in the program, out of which 49 are electronic, 89 optical and 21 SPM.
  • The equipment registered are distributed between: The Autonomous City of Buenos Aires; the provinces of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe, Rio Negro, Mendoza, Entre Rios, Tucumán, Salta, San Luis, and Corrientes.
  • ARS 2,070,440 is the total amount awarded so far by the SNM for financing of projects developed for training of human resources, purchase of supplementary equipment, and improvement of equipment

SNM provides member institutions the opportunity to submit requests for economic support. Projects to be financed may be related to training of professionals in microscopy (opticians, electronics, and scanning probes) inside the country or abroad; improvement of equipment and purchase of supplementary equipment for the existing equipment in public institutions. Also, we have contemplated financing for purchasing strategic equipment.

National Microscopy System

The mission of the National Microscopy System is to implement policies that maximize the use of large microscopes used for research that have been purchased with public funds. In this micro, Dr. Alejandro Ceccatto, Secretary of Science and technology Articulation and three important researchers speak about the possibilities and benefits of this system.
