Argentinean Associate Membership to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

ARGENTINA JOINS THE EUROPEAN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY LABORATORY (EMBL) AS ASSOCIATE MEMBER STATE
This association membership aims to promote scientific capacity-building through education and training of Argentine researchers, granting preferential access to EMBL facilities and services, and through encouraging collaboration in research and in various other fields related to the activities of the Laboratory.

In November 2012, and in order to promote scientific cooperation between Argentina and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation signed a Memorandum of Understanding which became the first step towards obtaining the status of Associate Member State of EMBL. Argentina’s associate membership was officially signed in April 2014.

The main objective of the associate membership is to promote scientific capacity-building through education and training of Argentine researchers, granting preferential access to EMBL facilities and services, and through encouraging collaboration in research and in various other fields related to the activities of the Laboratory.

Some specific objectives and main actions include:

  • Short-term visits of fellows and researchers for conducting collaborative research projects, training, learning of new techniques and networking.
  • Organization of joint training activities (courses, workshops, roadshows etc.) in Argentina and EMBL, with particular focus on Bioinformatics (EMBL-EBI Training Programme) and in Structural Biology and Imaging, but also other relevant áreas
  • Organization of scientific outreach events (meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops) in Argentina and at EMBL to promote opportunities for collaboration within the framework of the associate membership.
  • Visits to EMBL for scientific administrators for capacity building and information dissemination related to scientific policy and science administration (grants, training, alumni, public relations, tech-transfer, etc.).
  • Possibility for Establishment of EMBL partner institutes in Argentina.
  • Doctoral training (EMBL International Ph.D. Program)
  • Postdoctoral training (EIPOD-EMBL Interdisciplinary Postdocs Program
  • Creation of Interdisciplinary Training Centers (CELFIs).

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

The EMBL is a nonprofit organization funded by public funds from twenty one Member States, including much of Europe and Israel, and two Associated Member countries (Argentina and Australia).

It conducts  cutting edge research, offers vital services to scientists in the member states and engages in scientific training, technology development and transfer in the broad spectrum of molecular biology.

EMBL operates from five sites across Europe:

Interdisciplinary Postdocs: EI3POD Programme

In the framework of Argentina´s Associate Membership to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the National Directorate of International Relations of the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (MINCYT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote cooperation between Argentinean and European researchers  under the EI3POD (Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND) Programme.

EI3POD is a postdoctoral fellowship programme, which consists of three modules: interdisciplinary, international/institutional and intersectorial. All applicants must develop a research proposal as part of their application and should get directly in contact with potential EMBL supervisors to prediscuss projects prior to submission. Group leaders EMBL may be contacted through research units or  by research topics.

The EIPOD fellowship programme is open to all nationalities. About twenty (20) EIPOD positions will be funded, after a competitive selection process. Applications must filed prior to September 10, 2015.
